First off, I do not remember Mrs. Weldon from the 80's. I do not know what she is about. I'm only responding to comments upon comments here.
What I rant about comes from my own understanding of biology and social studies. The late onset of transgender ideas that hit it off with me helped me understand things on another level, that's all.
"Speaking on BBC Newsnight, the author and playwright, who is known for her controversial views, said she thought some people transitioned to becoming female because it is easier to be a woman."
- I think she is right. The less attractive it becomes being a man, the more men will wish they were born a woman. A no brainer, really.
""There are lots of sort of transgender people for whom this is a really serious business, but there is also a sort of undertow of frivolous people who for the sake of fashion or the clothes or whatever want to be the other gender," she said."
- Yeah, ok. So what? I could ask like Conan, "What is best in life?" Maybe it's neither "a falcon at your breast, wind in your hair" nor "To crush your enemy; to see them driven before you; to hear the lamentations of their women" to a lot of people.
Body modification has been around since the beginning of time. Humans do it......because they can. It should not seem unusual. In every culture, people alter what they were born with. Even something as simple as ears piercing is body modification. (I'm trying to get six piercings for my ears; three on each.) As to women being the more attractive sex, that's just modern life. With the fashion industry catering to women's interests, men got left out really. Men used to have their own barber shops, taylors, and shoe makers at one time. The billion dollar industry made so much money from women since the 20th century that men's looks have been forgotten. I'm not surprised men want to play with face paint and frilly clothes. I keep saying: look at historical costumes around the world!!
Then there's something else. Warfare, people, warfare! I had to read about this from an Israeli evolutionary psychologist who was also a military man, warfare! (I also visited the Intrepid air craft carrier museum last week. Just throwing in the stuff that comes to mind.) Since the 20th century, warfare has gotten less and less about hand-to-hand combat and more and more about technology, strategies, and diplomacy. (This is what the Israeli army psych. said.) As a result, I think men with brutish looks that would scare the shit out of enemies are losing out to gentler faces, such as those often found in women. Between the beauty industry and more and more time given to commercialism as opposed to wars, it's not unusual that men want to look like women. Yes, this is a no brainer, Monique. National defense loses out to commercialism. There simply isn't enough fashion brands that cater to men. Men have to turn to women's stuff.
All of this just becomes more complicated for transgender people who may have a biological and psychological gender variation. They would have to navigate through society as I have described. But a medical gender variation is a reality for some people and gender treatment is necessary in their cases. The She-Devil woman is right about exceptional cases, otherwise it's just a trend. But I also agree, Monique, "so what?" because
1. body modification is humanistically cultural
2. what's the fear if body modification doesn't make the person stupid and poor? (You know I value education and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, Monique.)
(I have to eat go shopping and eat dinner now.) As to feminism, I think what the She-Devil woman was complaining about was second and third wave feminism. After women gained the right to vote in many countries around the world (first wave), a lot of women actually felt that they were still incomplete. I think a lot of women moved away from voting rights of first wave feminism and just wanted to punish men for themselves not being men! It's like penis envy on a grand scale. Second and third wave feminism were mixing up women's biology with social constructs. I think this is what the She-Devil meant.
Time for food! Bye!
