I love this symbol.  I thought the former Swedish company was campaigning for men and masculinity as I am.  No, the symbol is for iron in old alchemy practices.  The Volvo founders, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, once worked in the steel industry and wanted Volvo to be a strong Swedish company.  I'm going to look for tlhe Northeast arrow on Volvo cars from now on.

I never thought about Volvo as an alchemist shop before, but I guess you are right.

Here are some really beautiful alchemical prints that may illustrate how they thought about the world. As you will see, they were also thinking about gender bending.

Needless to say, one of the most popular Volvos ever was Volvo Amason. I am just saying.

*lol*

So what you guys think about the original Volvo rolling off the assembly line in 1927? Masculine, heh? Nothing fancy, but I kind of like it.

Actually, a long since late relative of mine was given one of these by his dad for his birthday. There is a wonderful 1920's photo of his young beautiful wife, decked out in a fox boa and all, behind the steering wheel of that car. Not a small gift coming from an ordinary Gothenburg beat cop.

Ha! Maybe in early 20th century Gotham, probably not so much in early 20th century Gothenburg. smiley: laugh

After all, the idyllic Gemütlichkeit of anno dazumal Sweden I don't think was a very suitable place for graft. Not among the decent working class or petit bourgeoisie, anyway. At least not like in that infernal behemoth of urban splendour, city of cities, New York, New York...
